What we do?
Roars not Whispers is working in joint partnership with the Scottish Youth Parliament and Oxfam in Scotland. This will help produce a youth dialogue and peer learning programme focusing on political, economic and social justice issues locally, nationally and internationally.
The project will also be working in tandem with the CIVICUS World Assembly, which is being held in Glasgow in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Roars not Whispers will support the development of the youth component of the World Assembly, and the participants of the youth assembly will be full participants in the world assembly.
Organisation
Roars not Whispers is unique project - it is totally youth led. Two 'steering groups' will be developed to direct the work of the project - one group will focus on the work in Scotland and one which will focus on the work of the CIVICUS World Youth Assembly.
2 young people from every local authority area in Scotland (32 local authorities in total) and 2 young people from other project areas around Scotland (32 in total) will be trained and supported to work with groups of young people in their local areas. These people are called peer leaders.
A wider group of young people will be influenced by the participants of the project, and laterally benefit from the project.
An increase in access to service or gains made as a result of project work will also benefit a wider group of young people.
Training
Over the three years of the project 96 peer leaders will develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to engage in decision making processes at local, national and international levels.
There will be three formal residential training weekends during the project. The team will provide ongoing support for the young people taking part in the training process, using project staff and other existing support networks.
Newly trained peer leaders will then pass on learned skills to other young people from diverse communities all over Scotland. (This will be done in phases over three years.
Again, these young people will have increased knowledge, skills and confidence to engage in local, national and international decision making processes.
